Part One - Notes on Computing Careers
Complete the following activities and answer the questions asked in a Word document:
  1. Complete the CyberCareers interest quiz.  Copy the characteristics and best fits applicable to you.  Look up two of the career suggestions on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and answer the following questions about them:
    • What do people in this job do? (2-3 sentences)
    • What kind of training do they have?
    • How much money do they make?
    • What are the job prospects like (will it be easy to get a job in the field in the next 5-10 years)?
    • Does this job type appeal to you? Why or why not? (5-8 sentences)
  2. Take the multiple intelligence test.  Which of the nine intelligences are you strongest in?  Copy the IT and IT-enabled jobs most relevant to that strength.  (There’s a spelling mistake in the test.  See if you can find it.)
  3. Visit the Microsoft employee profile website.  Find two employees you find interesting and answer these questions:
    • What are two interesting things about this person?
    • Can you imagine yourself in this person’s shoes?  Why or why not?

Part 2: Your Career and Computing

Some of you may be interested in pursuing a career in a computing field such as web development, software engineering or electrical engineering.  If so, great!  I’m guessing a number of you probably aren’t expecting to do that, though.  For this part of the assignment, I want you to look up how computing affects a field you think you might be interested in studying.  For example, if you are interested in pursuing nursing, it would be very useful for you to know that Nursing Information Specialists are in high demand.  If you’re interested in being a journalist, you might investigate the role of social networking in providing news.  If you’re interested in becoming an FBI agent, read about how agency records are now linked by an expensive computer system.  If you want to be an auto mechanic, you might be interested in reading one mechanic saying that “computers have become as much a part of the tool box as wrenches.” You have a lot of freedom in the direction you take this, so make sure you use the time to discover information useful to you as you make choices about your future.

If you are interested in a computing career, dig deeper into the specifics of what you might be interested in.  Robotics?  Network administration?  What do those mean?
Your will produce a PowerPoint presentation with at least the following features:
  1. Introduction slide describing the career or field you are interested in
  2. 1 slide with a summary of the ways computing has impacted that career or field
  3. 2 slides giving specific examples of how computing has impacted it
  4. Citations slide showing the webpages you have used
You will be graded on the depth of your research as well as the appeal of your presentation.  You should use pictures as well as text to illustrate your points.  For example, here is a great picture of a nurse entering in data using a hand-held device:
